How to Play Matchy Math
Getting Started
1. Understand the Game
Matchy Math is a multiplication matching game. Your goal is to find sets of three numbers where two are factors and the third is their product.
Example: 3, 4, and 12 form a valid set because 3 × 4 = 12
2. Select Your Numbers
- Tap three numbers on the grid to select them
- The numbers will highlight in green when selected
- Tap a number again to deselect it
3. Submit Your Answer
- Once you've selected three numbers, they are automatically checked
- If correct, you'll hear a bright chime and the numbers disappear
- If incorrect, you'll hear a buzzer and lose one life
Game Rules
- Time Limit: You have 10 seconds to find each set
- Lives: You get 2 wrong answers before game over
- Sets Per Level: Find all 3 sets to complete a level
- Levels: Progress through 10 challenging levels
Time Pressure
- The timer counts down from 10 seconds
- The timer display turns red when 2 seconds or less remain
- If time runs out, the next unmatched set is revealed in yellow
- After the hint is shown for 1.5 seconds, that set is removed and the game ends
Difficulty Progression
Levels 1-10: Single-Digit Factors
- Factors range from 2 to 9
- Products range from 4 to 81
- Example sets: 2×3=6, 5×7=35, 9×9=81
Levels 11+: Two-Digit Factors
- Factors range from 10 to 99
- Products can be quite large
- Example sets: 12×15=180, 25×24=600
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I've found a valid set?
Multiply the two smaller numbers. If the result equals the third number, you have a valid set. For example: 4 × 6 = 24, so {4, 6, 24} is valid.
What happens if I make a wrong match?
You'll hear a buzzer sound and lose one life. You can see your remaining lives in the header (X marks show wrong answers). After 2 wrong answers, the game ends.
Can I pause the game?
The game continues while you're playing. The timer keeps counting down, so work quickly!
What's the hint system?
When time runs out, the next unmatched set is highlighted in yellow with a pulsing animation. After 1.5 seconds, that set is removed and the game ends.
How do I improve my score?
- Find sets quickly to maximize your score
- Avoid wrong answers to keep your lives
- Progress through all 10 levels to become a multiplication master
- Practice mental math to recognize factor pairs faster
Can I replay levels?
Yes! You can play any level you've unlocked. Each time you play, the numbers are randomized, so it's a fresh challenge.
Tips and Tricks
Finding Sets Faster
- Look for small numbers first—they're often factors
- Recognize common multiplication facts (times tables)
- Look for patterns: if you see 2, look for even numbers that might be its multiples
- Eliminate numbers that are too large to be products of the visible factors
Managing Time
- Don't overthink—trust your instincts
- If you're stuck, make your best guess rather than running out of time
- The hint system will show you the answer if you run out of time
Mastering Multiplication
- Play regularly to strengthen your mental math
- Focus on factor pairs you find challenging
- Try to beat your previous score on each level
Troubleshooting
The game won't start
- Force quit the app and reopen it
- Restart your device
- Make sure you're running the latest version of iOS
- Make sure you have the latest version of Matchy Math from the App Store
Numbers aren't responding to taps
- Make sure you're tapping directly on the number buttons
- Try tapping more firmly
- Force quit and reopen the app
Sound isn't working
- Check your device volume
- Make sure "Do Not Disturb" is off
- Check that your device is not in silent mode
- Restart the app
Game crashes or freezes
- Force quit the app and reopen it
- Restart your device
- Make sure you have enough free storage space
- Update to the latest version of iOS
